Not all surf weeks are the same and it’s not just about the size of the waves. At Surf Cascais, we want you to enjoy every moment in and out of the water, so choosing the week that fits your style and expectations is key.
Whether your goal is to learn, progress, relax, or socialize, this guide will help you pick the perfect week for you.
1 ➡️ Start with Your Goal
Before choosing dates, ask yourself what you really want from your stay:
Do you want to learn quickly and build confidence?
Improve your technique and become more independent?
Meet new people and enjoy the Surf House atmosphere?
Slow down, surf lightly, and recharge?
Being clear about your intention makes the decision much easier.
2 - Know Your Guest Style 😎
Over the years, we’ve hosted all kinds of guests, and most fit into one of these five profiles:
First-Time Enthusiast: Excited to try everything, take photos, and enjoy multiple lessons. Best time: High or Mid season, with smaller, predictable waves and structured lessons.
Progressive Intermediate: Knows the basics, wants to improve turns and wave reading. Best time: Mid or Low season with variety of waves and coaching options.
Independent Seeker: Comfortable in the water alone, looking for more challenge and variety. Best time: Low or Mid season, with flexible coaching options. For those seeking focused progression, we recommend our Intense Packs for Intermediate & Independent surfers: Intermediate Course Breakdown
Social / Experience-Focused: Wants surf plus community, dinners, pool time, and new friends. Best time: High and Mid season — lively, social, and fun.
Relax & Reset: Prefers light surfing, chill time, yoga, and a slower pace. Best time: Low or Mid season — quiet, relaxed environment.
These profiles combine surfing ambitions with lifestyle expectations, helping you choose a week that matches not just your skills but the vibe you’re looking for.
3 - Understand Your Surf Level & who you’ll surf with
At Surf Cascais, we organize groups and coaching based on your surf level, but the people around you also shape the week.
Surf Levels
Level 1 – Beginner: Just starting out, learning the basics on the foam or small green waves with guidance from a teacher in the water.
Level 2 – Intermediate: Comfortable with the basics, beginning to ride green waves and make controlled left and right turns with support in the water.
Level 3 – Independent: Confident and self-sufficient, able to ride green waves up to ~1 m on a hardboard, with coaching mainly for technique or filmed feedback.
Level 4 – Advanced: Fully independent, surfing waves up to ~2 m on a shortboard and focusing on refining turns and flow.

The People You’ll Meet
One of the highlights of Surf Cascais is the community vibe:
Age mix: Quieter months tend to attract slightly older guests with shorter stays, while warmer months see younger travellers staying longer.
Solo vs Groups: Many people come alone and make friends at the villa or during weekly dinners; couples and small groups fit right in.
Gender mix: Around 65% of guests are female, and we offer two female-only dorms to make everyone feel welcome.
No matter your profile, you’ll find a group that feels like home, making the week as social or as relaxed as you want. Read more about the types of guests at Surf Cascais here.
4 - Pick the Season That Suits You
The season affects waves, crowd, and lifestyle vibe:
Season | Best For | Why |
Low (Nov–Mar) | Independent, Relax & Reset | Less crowd, focus on technique, peaceful Surf House environment. |
Mid (Apr–May + Oct) | All guest profiles | Consistent waves, moderate crowd, mild weather — good balance for learning & socializing. |
High (Jun–Sep) | Beginners & Social | Small, predictable waves, lively Surf Villa, great for meeting others. |
5 - Combine Surf & Lifestyle 🍻
A week at Surf Cascais is more than surfing:
Chill by the pool or in the garden;
Join the yoga sessions;
Explore the Portuguese culture around (Cascais, Sintra, Lisbon);
Social dinners and community events;
Personalized coaching for focused progression (Intense Packs for Intermediate / Independent surfers)Intermediate Course Breakdown
The perfect week is about balancing surf, learning, and lifestyle — exactly what you’re looking for.
