Many people keep asking this question and we have plenty of reasons to give you :) Since we opened our cosy Surf House all year-round we offer surf packages during the peak of winter and it's crazy how good the weather and conditions can be. Surfing is mostly associated with beach, sun and summer, but that's not exactly when the best conditions are or the ideal time to join us. Every season has it's good & bad sides and we are here to show you all the reasons to visit us during the low season months 🤩
1) Less people = more care & love 💙
We start with the obvious one, not everyone thinks about surfing in the winter or simply prefers to go somewhere warmer. Having less people allow us to pay more attention to detail and make it more personal.. Surf Cascais is all about the people, the good vibes and the home feeling. Nothing easier and better than a smaller family, sharing the best possible time in a cosy home. We still count with a resident team of 2 or 3 volunteers, ready to help you at any moment and create a nice atmosphere even with not many guests. Result: you will never be alone!
To finish, teaching surfing can be very personal and having smaller groups allow us to dig deeper, understand better how each student wants to learn and find the best way for progression.
2) Our Surf Lessons
There are crucial factors that make a winter surf lesson more or less pleasant. Here are the highlights of how we make it better for you:
Surf Conditions: We have the privilege to have two different coastlines, one facing northwest (very exposed to the wind and waves) and another one facing southwest (super protected). Apart from that, in our protected coastline we can go deeper into Tejo river and find even more protected places, such as Torre Beach (used many times with great green waves all winter long) or even further into Lisbon like Paço d'Arcos, Caxias or Cruz Quebrada. With these options we can find ideal conditions for all levels, including beginners & first timers :)
It's also surprising how many small & clean days we have over winter. Sometimes we even surf at Guincho beach (very exposed beach). Conditions can get super stormy at times but always followed but nice and sunny days ☀️;
Surf Equipment: Despite the water temperature be pretty much the same in winter and in the summer (around 16ºC year-round), the outside fresh wind makes things a bit more challenging. Thinking about our students comfort and joy in the water, we have the best wetsuits in the market (O'neill) and use 5'4mm thickness (the same used in northern Europe). We also have boots and gloves if needed. This way, nobody feels cold in the water and can enjoy even in the colder days;
Timming: Finding the best time of the day for the ultimate conditions is something we lose many hours planning. Mostly we plan the surf lessons in the best spot (beach in this case) and with the best tide. However, in winter, looking for that extra warm is crucial, so we also look for times of the day when the sun is shinning and temperatures are nicer.
3) The Surf House 🏡
Everyone loves the Surf Villa, the garden facing the pool and all the dynamic that goes on there. But our latest accommodation has the perfect amenities for a low season experience. Its smaller, more cosy, warmer and has a lovely patio facing south (more sun exposed and less windy). Every division of the house has AC, making it fast and environmentally friendly to warm and brand new double glass windows (ideal to keep that warm inside). Its also ideal if you want to get some work done, since it has very fast internet connection (500mb/s) and a desk (either outside or inside in every room). There is also a big common table inside and another table outside.
We probably offer the best shared room you can find (Carcavelos Room), with only 3 single beds, private bathroom, private balcony facing south and AC. If you are looking for a warm and cosy room with a cheap price, this is for you :)
We still provide all the additional services such has yoga, video coaching and some dinners for low season stays at the Surf House.

4) Surroundings 💒🌿
Cascais is situated in a privilege area. It's close enough from Lisbon to a day trip and its surrounded by a natural park with Sintra hills. It's impossible to get bored, even in these slower months. Lisbon has been hectic for the last years due to a highly increase on the tourism flow. Its during this time of the year, where you can still visit all the touristic places in peace and experience the city in a more authentic and local vibe. If you are more of an exploring person and being outdoors, there is plenty of nature around in ''Parque Natural Sintra Cascais''. We can pass you the best tracks or you can book an eBike tour with legendary Bica.
