Spring at Surf Cascais

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

In Portugal, even though we are blessed with hundreds of days of sunshine every year we still have distinct seasons. Now that the winter has almost passed it’s time to get excited for spring, and a perfect opportunity to really feel what Portugal has to offer. At Surf Cascais, we look forward to this time of the year for many reasons because of the longer days, some of our favourite holidays and of course, the incredible surf.

Perfect Surfing Conditions

During the spring time we are usually fortunate enough to see some great surf at most of our favourite breaks, including Praia de Carcavelos where we give most of our surf lessons at this time. Winter tends to bring lots of sand to the beach at Carcavelos meaning that by the time spring comes around, the waves usually break further out allowing for soft and easy drops. These sand banks also mean longer lasting foams for our beginner surfers which means that spring is a perfect time to learn for all ability levels.

Longer, Warmer Days

After December 21st (shortest day of the northern hemisphere's year) the days begin to grow longer. Combine this with some Portuguese sunshine and you will be left feeling as if summer has arrived early. At this time of year, nature also awakens from its winter nap to cover the landscape with colours and scents. This is a perfect opportunity to explore the Sintra National park which is perched right on the doorstep of the villa, where the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. Or even take a stroll along the beach in temperatures that, at times, are already warm enough to tempt you to sunbathe and swim.

Carnival

Two of Portugal’s biggest holidays take place during the spring, Easter and one of our absolute favourites… Carnival. The carnival is an annual event in Portugal and is a great time to get to know the locals a little better and take in the culture. Originating hundreds of years ago, the modern Portuguese Carnival is all about music, dancing and, of course, the costumes. The elaborate costumes of carnival are something to behold and make for great fun. If you really want to take in the Carnival atmosphere you can take a short drive from our villa to the town of Torres Vedras, home of one of the country’s most famous and traditional Carnival festivals.
